Challenge Thought Distortions
Thought Distortions - a term from the field of Cognitive Behavior Therapy - should just be called “common crazy ways of thinking we all do that cause us unnecessary distress.” But that’s not quite as snappy lol. But that’s what they are. Specifically, thought distortions are:
Thoughts that are untrue, but which we believe wholeheartedly
Thoughts that cause us unnecessary distress - i.e. they torture us in a way
Thoughts that block out any other evidence that we would otherwise see
What’s crazy is that EVERY HUMAN experiences thought distortions. But some of us, some of us unfortunately experience more of them, more often, and more intensely.
Good news! You can learn to spot thought distortions, acknowledge that you might not be seeing all the facts, and start to challenge them. The more you do this, the easier and more natural it becomes and eventually you’ll be nearly free of them. Awesome!
